The highest waterfalls in Europe: le Marmore

2 Days

Cascata delle Marmore at 165m, is one of the highest in Europe. It forms at the confluence of the Velino river and the Nera river. In 271 B.C., the Romans began the excavation of the canal into which all the waters of the marshland that covered the present-day Rieti plain would flow, carrying them towards the edge of the Marmore cliff, where they would then fall in a spectacular fall. In the following centuries, the Waterfall underwent further modifications and channelling, which determined its current appearance.

The Waterfall can be experienced through paths surrounded by lush vegetation.

Trip

Day 1 :
Day 1:

10.00 am: Arrival at the car park at the entrance to the Marmore Falls where the ticket office is located. Guided tour of the Three Leap Trails, starting from the Upper or Lower Belvedere.
Visit the three main jumps of the waterfall starting from the Specola and the Lovers' Balcony (on the first jump) and then to the different viewing terraces (on the next two jumps)
Difficulty medium | Duration about 2 hours.
1.30 p.m.: Free packed lunch or at one of the refreshment points in the park.
3.30 p.m.: Departure to reach the characteristic village of Montefranco, built in the Longobard era as a defensive bulwark of the Duchy of Spoleto. The Church of the Madonna del Carmine, with 17th-century frescoes of the Umbrian school and a 16th-century Ascension, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, of medieval origin, enlarged to three naves at the time of Pope Eugene IV (15th century), and the Church of San Bernardino, dating back to 1454, with frescoes attributed to Orlando Merlini, a pupil of Benozzo Gozzoli, are interesting. On Monte Moro, above the historic centre, there is an archaeological site where the remains of flooring from a building dating back to Roman times have been unearthed.
The municipal territory, within the area of the Nera River Park, offers various nature and adventure opportunities for canoeing, rafting, canyoning, sport climbing and caving excursions.
6.30 p.m.: Move to the accommodation facility at Piediluco Lake.
8 pm: Dinner at the hotel.

Day 2 :
Day 2:

9 a.m.: Breakfast at the booked accommodation facility
10 a.m.: possibility of choosing between two routes of varying difficulty.
Route no. 1.
Church of San Francesco Piediluco Albornoz Castle 2.4 Km. Low difficulty.
Departure from the centre of Piediluco to arrive at the place where the ruins of the castle remain today, Mons Lucus, was a sacred wood dedicated to the Roman divinity Velinia, wife of Janus. Perhaps the first building to rise on its summit was a small temple dedicated to this deity, later replaced by a watchtower fortification at the fall of the Roman Empire.
The route is rich in views.
White mountain road approx. 0 % trail 5 % asphalt and along the lake 95 %.
Route no. 2
Madonna dell’Eco. 3.3 Km (2 km foot e 1 by boat). Medium difficulty.
Departure from the lakeside at the ferry embarkation point to reach the other shore and from here the walk to Monte Caperno begins, where the Madonna dell'Eco, a statue made of cast iron and obtained from the casting of weapons from the Ethiopian War, is located. The route is rich in views.
White mountain road approx. 5% trail 70% asphalt 0% and boat 25%.
1.30 p.m.: Return to the centre of Piediluco and lunch at one of the lakeside restaurants.
4 p.m.: Visit to the small village of Piediluco, dominated from above by the Albornoz Fortress, of which only the evocative remains of some rooms, the tower and the walls remain today.
Strolling through the narrow streets of the old town centre, you can visit the small Church of St Francis, built in the 13th century in honour of St Francis of Assisi, who frequently visited these places. It consists of a single nave and its portal is decorated with bas-relief figures of boats and fish. It has been guarding some relics of St Francis since 1999.
We also recommend visiting Villalago, a splendid residence built by Baron Eugenio Franchetti in the late 1800s. It is surrounded by a large natural park with a beautiful view of the lake, equipped picnic areas and an open-air theatre, currently used during the summer for important events.
6.30 p.m.: End of service.
