Gubbio, between the Middle Ages and Nature

Arrival in Gubbio, accommodation in hotel. In the morning, a free visit to Gubbio, the city that has best preserved its medieval appearance in Umbria: Piazza 40 Martiri with the Church of San Francesco, the typical San Martino quarter, the Bargello Fountain and Piazza Grande, the largest hanging square in Italy, with the imposing Palazzo dei Consoli and the Duomo.

Breakfast at the hotel. Departure for Umbertide. Located in the northern part of Umbria, Umbertide lies in the territory of the Upper Tiber Valley. In the historical centre, the Rocca, a superb medieval fortress, has always been the symbol of the city. Completely renovated, it is currently home to the Centre for Contemporary Art. The octagonal church of Santa Maria della Reggia, known as the Collegiate Church (16th century), and the church of Santa Croce (1610), skilfully restored and converted into a museum, are noteworthy. Inside is Luca Signorelli's Deposition from the Cross (1516) and a large painting by Pomarancio. The church of San Bernardino (1556) and the church of Santa Maria della Pietà (1486), with a fresco attributed to Pinturicchio, are also valuable. Afternoon continuation to Montone. The history of Montone, which began in the 9th century, is deeply linked to the fortunes of the Fortebraccio family, who ruled the territory. The most artistically valuable building in Montone is the Gothic Church of San Francesco (14th century) with a single nave and polygonal apse: inside, numerous frescoes of the Umbrian school, some attributed to the master Bartolomeo Caporali, and interesting wooden groups.
Another important religious building is the collegiate church of St Mary and St Gregory the Great, built in 1310 and restored during the 17th century, where the relic of the Holy Thorn is displayed on Easter Monday. End of services.
