The city's curious location is due to the Quaternary activity of the volcanoes of the Volsinio system, where the basin created is home to Europe's largest volcanic lake, Lake Bolsena.\nWe begin with a visit to the basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, the city's cathedral, whose main characteristic is its Gothic style; its construction was begun towards the end of the 13th century at the behest of Pope Nicholas IV.\nCharacteristic of the exterior fa\u00e7ade are the bas-reliefs representing Genesis, Messianic Events, New Testament stories and the Last Judgement. \nNear the cathedral, we can find the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo.
